The Road Past Altamont
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (December, 1993)
Authors: Gabrielle Roy and Joyce Marshall
Average review score:

A most beautiful little novel
Gabrielle Roy is one of my favorite authors and this book is just another example of how she is able, with few well chosen words, to reach deep into the human spirit. On the surface this is a simple story of a little girl growing up and her small adventures with her grand-mother, an older gentlemen in the neighborhood, and her own mother. And yet, it is so much more. It is about growing old. It is about memories. It is about what makes husband and wives stay together against all odds. It is about what makes life a special gift to each and every one of us. If you have not yet read Gabrielle Roy, you are in for a very unique and special treat!!

Rocket Science Retailing Is Almost Here--Are You Ready?
Published in Digital by Harvard Business School Press (28 June, 2003)
Authors: Marshall L. Fisher, Ananth Raman, and Anna McClelland
Average review score:

BEST ARTICLE ON THE FUTURE OF RETAILING
I studied under Prof. Fisher at Wharton, and we read this text in his Retail Supply Chain management course. I foudn this to be the best vision of the future of the retail supply chain. In it, the authors address how technological advances will enable retailers to do unprecedent levels of analysis.

If you would like a peek at what the operations of world-class retailers are likely to look like in a dozen years, I strongly recommend this article.

The Rocky Mountain Journals of William Marshall Anderson: The West in 1834
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (April, 1987)
Authors: William Marshall Anderson, Eleanor T. Harris, and Dale Lowell Morgan
Average review score:

Significant of the fur trade era
Anderson's journal, diary and narrative are an insightful look into his personal experiences, observations and thoughts during the fur trade year of 1834. Describing the multitude of people, places and events along the soon to be Oregon Trail , I can see why many historians reference his book for this time period. In typical Dale Morgan fashion, the editing is extremely well done, meticulously picking his way mile by mile with Anderson. Also included is the "Galaxy of Mountain Men" which are short but pertinent biographies of forty five men who influenced and helped shape the fur trade and western expansion movement.

Rollo Bones, Canine Hypnotist
Published in Hardcover by Tricycle Pr (April, 1998)
Author: Marshall M. Moyer
Average review score:

Fun story with wonderful twist!
Ladies and Gentlemen, meet The Amazing Brain. He will perform amazing feats of hypnotism right here live on our stage!! Oh, yes, let me also introduce to you his dog, Rollo Bones, the canine hypnotist...

In this funny, brightly illustrated story, The Amazing Brain (T.A.B., for short) and his brown dog, Rollo Bones, tour the country doing amazing feats of hypnotism. When a woman with tall, bright red hair stares deep into Rollo's eyes, TAB tells her to act like a chicken!! She does, scratching around the stage, clucking to herself and even pecking at bits of thrown popcorn. What a feat!! They perform even for the crowned heads of Europe.

While success seems to be going to Brain's head (no pun intended), Rollo is getting tired of the ceaseless traveling, the constant barrage to do this, don't do that, and he misses the good old days when the Brain and he would just go outside and play, or relax. One day, deciding he'd had enough, Rollo runs away.

It doesn't take readers long to grasp that Rollo is the real star of the show, and without him, The Amazing Brain isn't so amazing anymore. After a time, Rollo gets tired of being alone and creeping about in disguise, because Brain has put out an alert for him. The ending has a wonderful reunion, of course, but also a subtle, mischievous little surprise.

I love "Rollo Bones" and press it on friends and family with young children whenever I can, especially if they have dogs! The illustrations are bright, bold and oversized and look to be drawn with either oil pastels or crayon. This gives the illustrations a child-like quality that is fun for young readers. The text of the story is easy to read and uncomplicated. It flows easily from beginning to end and fits the illustrations perfectly. This is a great choice for young children or beginning readers, say, age 5 and up (any younger and they might not be able to grasp the meaning of "hypnotism").

Perfect for the dog lover as well, "Rollo Bones" is a wonderful book with a zippy story and fun ending. Highly recommended!!

The Romance of the Book
Published in Paperback by Birch Brook Pr (01 October, 1995)
Authors: Marshall Brooks and Baldin
Average review score:

Old-fashioned, romantic, wonderful
If you feel in any way romantic about books, if you think they are more than paper furniture, if you cannot even imagine a future where all text is stored digitally, this is the book for you.

Even before actually reading the essays collected inside, you will notice it is something special: The book is not your average slick paperback - it is printed by letterpress, and the cardboard cover doesn't show a shiny, colorful photograph but a monochrome woodcut.

This is an unashamedly old-fashioned book. Inside, you find excerpts from texts by Faith Baldwin and Stephanie Greene, Leigh Hunt and Malcolm X, and many others. A book for book lovers, for romantics, for anyone and everyone in any way affiliated with books.

If you enjoyed "Ex Libris" by Anne Fadiman and "Bookworms" by Carol and Graf, you will love this book!

Fantastic Resource for SF&F Magazines
If you are trying to find information about a SF&F magazine that was printed before 1985, this is your best source to find it. It lists all of the major magazines and even lists the magazines that lasted only 1 or 2 issues. It is an invaluable resource for the collector.

Seaside High (Aloha Cove)

Seaside High
Seaside High, by Teresa Kelly, is a great book! Cass Devane has adjusted to the move to Kawajelein and is starting her Junior year in high school. As school goes on 3-4 guys get really interested in her. She wonders why these guys are interested in her all of a sudden, but enjoys it. In the end she realizes who she should go out with and who not to. She still has her ups and downs about not being in Tennesee and with her friends and family there. Tabitha and her are working at being nice to each other, but they still have their go arounds. Especially about guys. They accuse each other of using the guy the other one likes and it's a big mess until they realize the truth. Tabitha and Cass both tell the guy that they like that they like him. It is a great book.
